Make Your Countertops Kid Friendly

Your kitchen counters have to do more than just look good, they need to be functional. This is even more so the case in households with children. So, how can you best protect your little ones from injuring themselves and protect your counters from damage at the same time? Here are a few of our best tips.

Opt for a Durable Stone

When you live in a house with children, accidents are bound to happen. That is why it's important to choose a durable material from the beginning. If a little one spills something on your counters, you want a stone that will not easily stain. Quartz is a great option because it is inherently non-porous and therefore will not be susceptible to developing stains or harboring bacteria.

Choose a Dark Color

Even if you choose a stain resistant stone such as granite, it is not completely impervious to sustaining marks and scars. If your child is drawing a picture on the kitchen island and misses the paper, for example, your counter will obviously still show that mark. That’s why choosing a dark colored stone in addition to a durable material is the best combo. That way, even if accidents like the one we mentioned happen, these marks will be hard to notice.

Don’t Forget to Seal It

Even if your countertop is a naturally porous type of stone, regularly sealing it can help. Granites and marbles should be resealed annually to increase durability. Resealing is a small price to pay for countertop longevity. Contact Colorado Stone & Tile Care if your counters need sealing.

Pick Soft Edges

Children often fall and run into objects around the house, and that includes countertop edges. Which is why it is so important to avoid installing countertops with sharp edges. Instead, opt for bullnose corners to reduce the risk of child injuries.

You have to make all sorts of special considerations when you have children, and your countertops are included in that. Hopefully this article gave you some useful tips for choosing a safe and sanitary countertop material.
